Scope of work
Field measurement of the firebox and stone surround, shop fabrication of a solid white-oak beam, a ceruse finish matched to an approved sample, and installation with a concealed steel mount anchored into blocking behind the stone.
Fabrication and installation
Shop-fabricated from solid stock, hand-planed, hidden steel spine let into the back of the beam
Stacked-stone face was uneven, so the mantel back was scribed to the stone rather than the stone adjusted to the mantel. Steel mount anchored into framing installed behind the stone before the stone was set.
What the detail solved
The homeowner wanted a heavy timber look without visible brackets or lag heads showing against the stone.
Corners eased by hand rather than run through a router table, so the arrises read as hand-worked.
