What drives cost
- Materials
A box beam is built from three faces over a concealed cleat, so it uses far less raw material than a solid timber of the same apparent size. Solid and reclaimed timbers cost more per beam and vary with mill availability.
- Size and dimensions
Span sets the stock. Longer beams need heavier material to stay straight and require more mounting points. Beam depth and width also affect how much stock each face consumes.
- Design complexity
Parallel beams across a flat ceiling are the baseline. Intersecting grids, coffered layouts, beams that meet a ridge at an angle, and any junction requiring a mitred corner all add layout and fitting time.
- Site conditions
Joist direction relative to the beam run determines how cleats are anchored. Vaulted and sloped ceilings need angled cuts at every bearing point. Ceiling height affects staging and how long each beam takes to place.
- Hardware
Concealed cleats and structural fasteners are standard. Decorative straps, bolts, or ironwork are an additional material and add layout time so they land consistently across every beam.
- Finishing
Stain choice is worth sampling in the actual room, since a colour that reads warm in the shop can read differently under the room's lighting. Staining and finishing can be included in the approved project scope, or you can take the beams untreated.
- Installation
Beams are installed overhead, so access and room readiness matter. An occupied, finished room takes longer to protect and work in than one still under construction.
- Supplier and commodity changes
Timber and dimensional lumber both move with commodity markets, and reclaimed stock depends entirely on what a mill has at the time. Quotes reflect conditions when written.

Yes. We locate the joists, anchor a concealed cleat, and the box beam wraps it.
Do decorative beams add structural strength?+
No. Decorative beams are non-structural. If you need a load-bearing beam, that's framing work and outside our scope.
How many beams should a room have?+
We'll draw two or three layouts and walk the room with you before anything is fabricated. Ceiling geometry usually settles the question faster than a rule of thumb.
